WE have seen again this week a lack of respect for a war memorial.
This time vandals decided to attack the American war memorial in the Priory Memorial Gardens.
It is behaviour that has to be condemned.
And again we say that once the culprits have been arrested, the courts have to act with the most stringent penalty they are able to hand down.

It may be a deterrent to others who want to engage in this kind of anti-social behaviour.
There is no need for such vandalism, but such behaviour shows again the need for police to be ever-vigilant, and to keep making regular patrols of the Priory Memorial Gardens.

The attack, too, shows the lack of understanding about the memorial.
It is there as a day-to-day reminder of the courage of the men of the 91st Bomb (Heavy) Group, who were based at Bassingbourn during the Second World War.
Their losses were appalling from undertaking dangerous day-time raids over occupied Europe.
It is the reason for us to remember - and to show the respect they deserve.
