I REFER to the report in The Crow (Town votes in new councillors) and specifically to the comment made by Councillor Debbie Lemay: "I am delighted to be back on the council."

She continues that "I resigned because of the high Council Tax" and now promises to fight and try to get it down.

Has the electorate in Buntingford such short memories of her previous performances on the town council, or was it Hobson's choice?

She resigned in 2005 because of the Council Tax, which, in some cases, she helped construct and/or approve.

In the year 2002-03, Cllr Lemay was deputy chairman of the town council, and therefore in a position to influence outcomes.

However, the increase in the precept for the following year was more than inflation at nearly 6 per cent.

Worse was to come in the year 2003-04. Cllr Lemay was chairman of the Resources Committee and during her tenure the budget for 2004-05 was constructed which resulted in the inflation-busting 26.9 per cent increase to the precept.

What did she do to prevent it?

It has already been put on record that Cllr Lemay resigned in 2005 and during her final year on the council she attended just two full council meetings.

So why wasn't she in there fighting for the causes which are now the main plank of her manifesto?

I think she must now reconsider her position and through the columns of the local press make a pledge to the electorate of Buntingford that her attendance at council meetings will be much better than her previous track record.
