SITUATED on the banks of the River Rhine, Cologne is one of the largest cities in Germany. Bridges from the historic parts of the city connect to the more commercial areas. One impressive view of Cologne can been seen by taking one of the many boat trips that run along the Rhine. The city certainly has an impressive skyline and there is plenty to visit - and for a pure shopping trip there is a collection of enormous department stores. The main attraction is Cologne is what is often described as the Mount Everest of all cathedrals - the Gothic St Peter and Mary Cathedral. Indeed, the cathedral is now recognised as a World Heritage Site. The cathedral is packed with treasures such as the golden Shrine of the Three Magi. There are 509 steps leading to an observation platform which gives a panoramic view of the city. In more modern times, Cologne has become known as a media and communications centre with a blend of art, culture and creativity and no fewer than 11 broadcasting companies. For those with an interest in sport, the city has the German Sports and Olympic Museum. TIP Oddly, Cologne gets most of its rain in the summer during June and August.
