TWO of the letters in last week's issue of The Crow complain that business rates charged in Royston are too high and blame North Herts District Council for this state of affairs. In the interests of accuracy, I must point out that business rates - more properly called National Non-domestic Rates (NNDR) - are based upon a valuation by the Inland Revenue and are then fixed by the Government. The district council is then responsible for collecting the money and passing it to Whitehall, where the Government then decides how much to return to local authorities. In the case of North Hertfordshire, I would be surprised if we get back as much as we are required to collect. Cllr F JOHN SMITH Leader North Herts District Council.
