THE proposal, put forward by Royston town centre manager Geraint Burnell (The Crow, February 9), to make The Warren and civic centre car parks pay-on-exit shows a distinct lack of awareness of current parking facilities in Royston. It would be discriminatory to blue badge holders and certainly against the spirit, if not the substance, of the access for all sections of the Disability Discrimination Act, and perhaps a point worth testing in the courts. At the civic centre car park this would also deny use of the disabled parking for those badge holders wanting access to the health centre and the civic centre. Perhaps Royston Town Council could issue tokens to blue badge holders to provide free exit? Of course, this will be academic in the future, when the centre of Royston is all studio apartments, the surgeries and everything else, including the charity shops, having relocated to the Tesco out of town shopping centre, which would occupy the whole north-west corner of Royston. Parking would no longer be free and blood pressure would always be checked before going through the check-out. ROGER GIBSON Cherry Drive Royston
