PUTTING on a new production of a classic musical is always a tricky process.

It's inevitable that audiences will make comparisons - good or bad - with versions of the show they have seen in the past.

And it is a credit to the team behind Cambridge Arts Theatre's version of My Fair Lady that is stands comparison to any that may have gone before it.

This take on the classic tale of Eliza Doolittle - the cockney flower girl transformed into the titular fair lady - is ostensibly an amateur production, but there is certainly nothing amateur about the performances of the talented cast.

As Eliza, Robyn North sang beautifully throughout, showcasing her vocal talents to the maximum.

Other outstanding performances were delivered by Phil Pritchard as the exasperated professor Henry Higgins, and Arts Theatre favourite Brad Fitt, who plays Eliza's father Alfred P Doolittle.

The audience enjoyed rousing renditions of all their favourite songs from the show, including Get me to the church on time and On the street where you live, while mention should be made, too, of the outstanding costumes which illuminated the show, particularly during the scene at Ascot race course.

It all made for an outstanding performance, one which showcases the depth of theatrical talent in the Cambridge area.

My Fair Lady runs until October 10. For ticket details and performance times, call 01223 503 333.
