THE photograph in last week's Crow Nostalgia has certainly revived memories from more than 50 years ago. And we are told that it was not a picture of a keep fit session, but, to give it its proper description, a physical culture class. One of those taking part was Maureen Watson, who now lives in Swindon, who said she believed the photograph was taken when the class was giving a demonstration. The class was led by Massie Drake, who was described as a "good teacher", and attended by her daughter, Doreen, who is seen standing behind Mrs Drake. Indeed, as Elizabeth Chapman told Crow Nostalgia: "There were a lot of mothers and daughters involved." In those days she was Elizabeth Langridge and she remembered activities with hoops and leg exercises. "In those days there was nothing like a gym around." She added that the class became known as Mrs Drake and her ducklings. The class met in Royston Town Hall during the early 1950s and at one time was selected to give a display of physical culture in London. Mrs Watson said: "I seem to remember that all the exercises were done to music. Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves and we certainly thought it was worthwhile.
