SWINGING at The Cotton Club comes to the Hawthorne Theatre in Welwyn Garden City later this month.

DO you remember a time when dancing was something you did with someone rather than at them? When cutting a rug on a dance-floor was an expression of joy through precision rather than looking like you’re having an epileptic fit?

If so, you’ll love Swinging At The Cotton Club at the Hawthorne Theatre in WGC later this month.

You won’t need a zoot suit or spats, but this celebration of swing music, jitterbugging and all things Harlem circa 1920 will certainly get you tapping your feet and probably moving your hips, too.

Led by the Harry Strutters Hot Rhythm Orchestra, who are tight when called for and loose when required to swing and improvise, the show creates a fun, relaxed atmosphere in tribute to the greats like Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong and Cab Calloway.

But the great bands of that day were usually joined by some incredible hoofers – names like Bojangles Robinson and the Nicholas Brothers, whose smooth moves were the prototype for everything that Michael Jackson ever did on a dancefloor.

Swinging At The Cotton Club is no different.

Filling the stage with movement, the fabulous Jiving Lindy Hoppers are unfailingly slick, precise and exciting as they revive forgotten dance steps and bring the house down with their syncopated rhythm.

Add in the sultry singing of Megs Etherington, who doubles as your compere for the night, and this truly is a night of astonishing skill, musicality and fun.

In fact, it would even charm any youngsters who saw it into thinking they should perhaps look into this syncopation thing!

* Swinging At The Cotton Club is at the Hawthorne Theatre on Friday, January 25. The show starts at 7.30pm. Tickets are £18.50 adults and £15.50 concessions.
