The third headliner for Knebworth rock festival Sonisphere 2014 has been announced.
The Prodigy will return to Knebworth Park at next summer’s fourth UK Sonisphere Festival.
They join already announced co-headliners Metallica and Iron Maiden on the rock event’s line-up, with the festival taking place from Friday, July 4 to Sunday, July 6.
Sonisphere founder Stuart Galbraith told the Welwyn Hatfield Times last week that organisers had been looking through previous Knebworth line-ups to help mark the historic venue’s 40th anniversary.
And the latest Sonisphere addition is in keeping with the festival’s plans to celebrate 40 years of concerts at Knebworth.
For band members Liam Howlett, Keith Flint and Maxim are no strangers to the grounds of the Hertfordshire stately home.
The chart-topping electronic dance/rock icons from Braintree, Essex – best known for number one hits Firestarter and Breathe – supported Britpop legends Oasis at Knebworth in August 1996.
They will kick-off the 2014 Sonisphere weekend with a bang on the Friday, followed by Iron Maiden headlining on the Saturday night. Metallica will close the festival on the Sunday.
Emerging out of the UK’s early ’90s rave scene, The Prodigy created a seismic shift in contemporary music by welding together industrial beats, punk-rock attitudes, aggressive vocals and searing guitars with their own unique take on dance culture, bringing rock, metal and rave fans together for the first time and becoming one of the most incendiary live acts in the world as a result.
Their festival headline slots have become legendary around the globe, so it is only fitting that they bring their uniquely brilliant stage show to headline at Knebworth Park for the first time.
Keyboardist Liam Howlett said: “We can’t wait to play Sonisphere 2014. We will be hitting you with some brand new beats and noise.”
Promoters of the roaming European festival are delighted to have secured The Fat of the Land and Invaders Must Die album stars for the opening night.
A statement from Team Sonisphere said: “We are ecstatic to announce that The Prodigy will be making a triumphant return to Knebworth to take up the position as the Friday night headliner on Sonisphere 2014, having previously played a legendary show with Oasis in 1996 to a 250,000 strong crowd.
“Famous for the sort of energy fuelled, insane and pulsating show that you can feel in your bones, we know that The Prodigy will bring something very special to Sonisphere.
“Adding this to the already announced headliner sets of Iron Maiden and Metallica is pretty much guaranteed to get the very foundations of Knebworth House shaking.”
The Prodigy’s fellow headliners, metal legends Iron Maiden and Metallica, have never before appeared on the same UK bill, and will be playing no other dates in this country in 2014.
Iron Maiden will be bringing their hugely-acclaimed Maiden England World Tour to a spectacular finale at Knebworth, featuring a set list reaching even further back into their 80s catalogue than before.
Metallica will be performing their interactive ‘By Request’ set, with ticket holders able to vote online for any tracks from their 140-song catalogue, with the 17 most popular choices being performed on the night.
