BACK in the early 1990s it was almost impossible to avoid hearing a Spin Doctors song on the radio.

Hit singles Two Princes, Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong and Jimmy Olsen’s Blues were staples of the radio playlist. While the album the songs came from, Pocket Full of Kryptonite, sold by the bucket load.

Following the recent celebration of the 20th anniversary of that 10 million-selling debut, the US rock gods are set to bring the party back to the UK for more good times and rock ‘n’ roll frolics.

The band’s nine-date tour kicks-off at the Edinburgh HMV Picture House on January 23 and arrives in Hertfordshire eight days later with a live show at the Hertford Corn Exchange on Thursday, January 31.

The quartet’s gig will feature new material from their new album, If The River Was Whiskey, which is slated for release this year.

Fans will still know them mainly for Pocket Full Of Kryptonite. It was one of the biggest smashes of the 90s. Released in the summer of 1991, the record elevated the Spin Doctors from a grassroots local phenomenon to a world-class recording act.

With substantial plays on MTV and radio, combined with the quartet’s tireless roadwork, it launched the Spin Doctors to mainstream success.

Signature tunes Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong and Two Princes peaked on the Billboard Hot 100 chart at number 17 and number seven respectively and showcased the group’s ability to write a catchy, loose, rock ‘n’ roll song, earning them a Grammy nomination.

The band subsequently featured on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine and also opened for The Rolling Stones on a series of North and South American stadium shows.

“There was always something special, from the very first time we played together,” lead singer Chris Barron said of the Spin Doctors’ long-standing musical chemistry.

“Even if we don’t see each other or play together for a while. It’s like riding a bicycle. A bicycle that makes loud, very beautiful music.”

As a live band, the core members of Barron (lead vocals), Eric Schenkman (guitar), Mark White (bass) and Aaron Comess (drums) are back doing what they do best, performing blues rock songs.

On debuting If The River Was Whiskey for UK audiences, Barron said: “It seems like destiny that we’re coming back to the UK, where we got the idea for our new blues record. “It’s kind of like our second home and we are excited to come over and share this music with the UK. We’ve had so many great gigs there.”

The Spin Doctors recorded Pocket Full of Kryptonite at New York’s Power Station, RPM and ACME studios with co-producers Peter Denenberg, Frank Aversa and Frankie LaRocka, the A&R man who signed the group to Epic.

“I think we were really able to capture the essence of the band,” said Comess of the album.

“We’d been playing clubs for three years before we made Kryptonite, and we’d probably played every one of those songs 500 times on stage.

“By the time we made the record, we were able to just go in there and do it.”

Pocket Full of Kryptonite had been out for nearly a year when the infectious Little Miss Can’t Be Wrong began receiving substantial play on MTV and radio.

That exposure, combined with the quartet’s busy touring schedule, launched the Spin Doctors to mainstream success, and before long the album was a massive hit around the world – selling five million copies in America and a similar amount elsewhere.

“When you get the four of us in one room, things just start to happen,” added Schenkman.

Tickets for their Corn Exchange gig cost from £15. Ring the ticket hotline on 01992 584322 or visit http://www.seetickets.com/Tour/THE-SPIN-DOCTORS
