ORGANISERS of Sonisphere 2014 are set to reveal more of the Knebworth music festival’s line-up, after last week announcing the first two huge headliners.
The three-day rock event will return to the grounds of Knebworth House next summer from Friday, July 4 to Sunday, July 6.
Just two groups have been announced so far, with the festival celebrating 40 years of rock shows at the iconic Hertfordshire venue.
Last Monday, promoters KiliLive confirmed Iron Maiden and Metallica will headline two days of the UK leg of the international touring extravaganza, the first time the bands have appeared together in this country.
The third Knebworth Park headliner has still to be revealed, but will be confirmed before Christmas, according to the festival’s official Twitter account @sonisphere.
The festival tweeted earlier this evening (Monday): “Just sent a sonisphere ad to print in the next issue of @Metal_Hammer only has all three blinkin’ headliners on.”
In answer to another tweet, @sonisphere confirmed there will be another Knebworth announcement before Christmas.
The official Sonisphere Knebworth poster also states: “Many more bands and comedians to be announced.”
It also says in small print: “Sonisphere Festival will also include parties, assorted revelry, Devil horns, random signs, group camps, football tournaments, repetitive word yelling, marriage proposals, toilet debates, shedloads of black T-shirts and owls. You already knew that though.”
At the time of the first line-up announcement, Sonisphere supremo Stuart Galbraith told the Welwyn Hatfield Times: “We have got two bands, the rest of the bill we are still working on.”
He added: “It’s fantastic for us to have Iron Maiden and Metallica and have them play at a festival for the first time ever and for Knebworth’s 40th.
“We have been working on it for a long time, in the case of trying to book bands for festivals it is never easy.”
British heavy metal legends Iron Maiden will finish their mammoth Maiden England world tour at Knebworth next summer.
American thrash metal gods Metallica will play a set requested by fans, with festival-goers selecting 17 songs and the band playing a new track.
On returning to the famous rock venue after two years away, Mr Galbraith added: “We are very, very happy to be back and we are looking forward to a great summer at Knebworth.”
The stately home’s managers are also overjoyed to have the weekend camping festival back on Hertfordshire soil.
Martha Lytton Cobbold, managing director of Lytton Enterprises Ltd, which manages the estate, said: “We are absolutely delighted to welcome back Sonisphere, and particularly with the astounding headliners of Metallica and Iron Maiden, in the year of our 40th anniversary of hosting rock events at Knebworth Park.
“Knebworth is about living history, creating, preserving and experiencing it, we look forward to having 60,000 Sonisphere fans join us to celebrate next July!”
