The Sonisphere 2014 festival line-up is taking shape for Knebworth Park this summer, with more of the main stage day splits revealed.
"I’m so excited for Anthrax to be a part of the biggest and best Sonisphere ever. Can’t wait to destroy Knebworth again!"
The three-day rock and metal festival returns to the grounds of Knebworth House from Friday, July 4 to Sunday, July 6.
The fourth UK edition of Sonisphere will be headlined by The Prodigy, Iron Maiden and Metallica, with the festival celebrating 40 years of rock concerts at the Hertfordshire stately home.
And following the addition of 10 further acts last Tuesday, making it 20 bands in total so far, more is known about the respective day splits for the international touring extravaganza’s Knebworth showcase.
The Prodigy will headline the opening night on July 4, with nu-metal legends Limp Bizkit on stage before them as their special guests.
It will be the American rap metallers’ third appearance at Knebworth, having played the main stage at the inaugural Sonisphere in 2009 and returned as support for headliners Slipknot two years later.
As previously announced, Iron Maiden and Metallica will exclusively headline Sonisphere’s Hertfordshire leg over the following two days, playing their only UK shows of 2014 at Knebworth.
British heavy metal legends Iron Maiden will round off their Maiden England World Tour at Knebworth on the Saturday, playing some songs live for the last time ever.
At present, there is still a space on the Sonisphere 2014 line-up poster for “special guests” below Iron Maiden on the Apollo stage on the second day of the festival.
Thrash metal titans Metallica will perform their interactive ‘By Request’ set on the Sunday night, with ticket holders able to vote online for any tracks from the band’s 140-song catalogue.
Team Sonisphere member and KiliLive promoter Alan Day revealed Seattle rock legends Alice in Chains will play the Apollo stage before Metallica on the closing day.
Sonisphere’s two main stages alternate, giving festival-goers the opportunity to watch everyone playing both the Apollo and Saturn arenas.
A big name act, as yet unconfirmed, will top the Saturn bill, taking the stage between Apollo special guests Alice in Chains and headliners Metallica.
Answering a question on Twitter relating to Alice in Chains’ position on the bill, Alan Day (@alandayrocks) tweeted: “@ironmaidentom @Sonisphere they are playing on Apollo before Metallica. there will be a band on Saturn inbetween.”
Having played their biggest-ever headline show at Alexandra Palace in London to rave reviews last year, Sonisphere 2014 will be Alice in Chains’ only UK festival appearance.
Lead vocalist and guitarist William DuVall said when they were announced: “We’re very excited to be playing once again at Sonisphere, particularly as this year has us joining our long-time friends in Metallica.
“It should be a fun ride for everyone – both on and off the stage.”
ALICE IN CHAINS
CHAS & DAVE
DEVIN TOWNSEND PROJECT
THE SISTERS OF MERCY
Devin Townsend Project, thrash metallers Anthrax, gothic rockers The Sisters of Mercy, Macclesfield three-piece The Virginmarys, American deathcore band Carnifex, London classic metallers Voodoo Six, American Celtic punks Dropkick Murphys, Canadian post-hardcore mob Silverstein and ‘rockney’ duo Chas & Dave were all announced for Knebworth last week.
Festival booker Alan Day confirmed Canadian musician Devin Townsend will be appearing on one of the two main outdoor stages at Knebworth.
He tweeted: “can’t say where or when, but @dvntownsend will be playing outdoors @Sonisphere everyone deserves to see this young man and his band”
Devin Townsend is delighted to bring his live show to Knebworth this summer. He said: “Amidst a year of relentless writing and planning, we are fortunate enough to be invited to a select few shows, and among the most cool is undoubtedly Sonisphere UK.
“It’s an institution that is really exciting, among bands we absolutely love. We can’t wait to take a studio break and come entertain you there. Thank you Sonisphere for the opportunity.”
Big 4 thrash metallers Anthrax have played every UK Sonisphere so far – and they will be back at Knebworth for a fourth time in July.
Guitarist Scott Ian took no persuading after receiving a call from his manager asking whether the band wanted “to play the 40th anniversary of Knebworth Sonisphere Festival with Iron Maiden”.
Ian said: “It’s one of those phone calls you only dream about. I’m so excited for Anthrax to be a part of the biggest and best Sonisphere ever. Can’t wait to destroy Knebworth again!”
This will be the band’s only UK festival appearance of 2014.
Londoners Voodoo Six, meanwhile, have been touring with Sonisphere headliners Iron Maiden lately.
Bassist Tony Newton said: “We are very proud to be asked to play at Sonisphere UK.
“It is the 40th anniversary of live events at Knebworth, and will be a great celebration of rock music with a fantastic line-up.
“To be included in this event is a huge honour, and we will play our part in making it a memorable weekend.”
