Metallica will headline Sonisphere Festival 2014 at Knebworth on Sunday night just a week after blowing away the Glastonbury faithful.

Metallica’s blistering set on the famous Pyramid Stage went down a storm at Glastonbury last Saturday night.

The group’s epic performance silenced a few critics who claimed a heavy metal band should not be headlining the Somerset music and arts festival – and it won them a legion of new fans.

And the good news for festival-goers pitching up at Knebworth Park this weekend is that Metallica’s Sonisphere 2014 gig will be bigger – and potentially better – than Glastonbury.

The American thrash legends make their third Sonisphere UK appearance on Sunday night, closing the main Apollo Stage with their ‘By Request’ set list chosen by ticket holders.

And the influential Los Angeles quartet – James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Robert Trujillo – will be bringing their full touring production, complete with laser show, to the Hertfordshire countryside.

They will also be playing Metallica classics such as Ride The Lightning, Fuel, Battery and Blackened which were not aired at Worthy Farm last weekend.

A news update on Sonisphere’s website stated: “Not only do we have the crazy laser show that’s been lighting the set up all over Europe, we have a longer show with full production and The Snake Pit.”

The pit refers to a special diamond shaped area extending from the middle of the stage for Metallica Fan Club member competition winners who will get to see their heroes up close.

Following last Saturday’s headline-grabbing Glastonbury gig, Metallica tracks Enter Sandman and Nothing Else Matters look set to re-enter the UK’s top 75 singles chart.

Both fan favourites from the Black Album will figure in the group’s Knebworth show on Sunday night.

Metallica’s set will also include Master of Puppets, For Whom The Bell Tolls and One.

The ‘Metallica Family’ at Sonisphere will also get to hear Fade to Black, Seek and Destroy, Creeping Death, Welcome Home (Sanitarium), Sad But True, The Unforgiven and the group’s cover of Whiskey in the Jar.

Metallica are due on stage at Knebworth around 8.15pm on Sunday.

Also playing Sonisphere’s closing day are Alice in Chains, Mastodon, Saturn Stage headliners Dream Theater, Dropkick Murphys and Airbourne.

The international touring festival opens on Friday, with The Prodigy headlining the main Apollo Stage.

British heavy metal legends Iron Maiden top the Saturday line-up with their acclaimed Maiden England set.
