The Free Church, in Church Road, will host Friends Music’s annual outing into jazz with saxophonist Les Rayner.

It is not only a change of venue from Friends Meeting House, it is also a change of format with the evening devoted to cool contemporary and fusion jazz performed by guest soloists with the Les Rayner fronted band Spontaneous Combustion.

Carol Walker will perform on the jazz harp, and vocals will be from Helen Robertson.

A Welwyn Garden City native, Helen will be well known locally as the singer with the very popular band she founded as a teenager, The $ellouts.

She subsequently toured Britain and Europe as her university jazz band’s vocalist.

Together they will be performing numbers by Chick Corea, John Coltrane, Joe Zawinul, Bobby Timmons, Charles Mingus and Herbie Hancock, as well as originals by Les Rayner and songs by Joni Mitchell, Amy Winehouse and more.

Admission tonight (Sunday) is free and the concert will raise money for the Esther Benjamins Trust.

The concert in the Free Church, opposite the Sainsbury’s car park, in Welwyn Garden City, will start at 6pm.
