The three-day rock and metal festival returns to the grounds of Knebworth House from Friday, July 4 to Sunday, July 6.

The Prodigy, Iron Maiden and Metallica will headline the event, which will celebrate 40 years of rock concerts at the Hertfordshire stately home.

Promoters of the international touring festival announced another seven bands – Slayer, Mastodon, Alice in Chains, Airbourne, Ghost, Gojira and Karnivool – on Monday evening.

And festival bookers at KiliLive expect to announce a couple of “special guests” soon.

A statement from Team Sonisphere said: “Many more bands, including two special guests, will be announced shortly.”

The confirmed day splits for Knebworth will see The Prodigy play the opening Friday night.

Iron Maiden and Metallica will exclusively headline Sonisphere’s Hertfordshire leg over the following two days, playing their only UK shows of 2014 at Knebworth.

British heavy metal legends Iron Maiden will close their Maiden England World Tour at Knebworth on the Saturday, playing some songs live for the last time ever.

Thrash gods Metallica will close the festival with their interactive ‘By Request’ set, with ticket holders able to vote online for any tracks from the band’s 140-song catalogue.

The 17 most popular fan choices will be performed on the Sunday night. A new track will also be chosen by the band.

It is not yet known which day the latest additions will play or on which stage.

The “special guests” set to be announced could be the Apollo main stage sub-headliners to Iron Maiden and Metallica or the Saturn stage headliners.

Added to the bill on Monday were Australian hard rockers Airbourne, Seattle legends Alice in Chains, Swedish doom-rockers Ghost and Gojira.

Having toured with the likes of Trivium, Lamb Of God, Machine Head and Metallica over the years, it will be French progressive-metallers Gojira’s sole UK festival appearance of 2014.

Joe from Gojira said: “We are super excited to return to the UK to play the Sonisphere festival at legendary Knebworth this year. We can’t wait.”

Thrash metal giants Slayer will also return to Knebworth this summer, having played the historic Hertfordshire venue as part of the Sonisphere ‘Big 4’ Friday in 2011.

Completing Monday’s line-up announcement were Perth-based Australian prog-rock quintet Karnivool and American metallers Mastodon, who appeared at the inaugural Sonisphere UK leg back in 2009 and again two years later.

Mastodon’s exclusive 2014 performance at Sonisphere will be the first chance for British fans to see them play tracks from their forthcoming sixth album, which is due out in the spring.

Weekend camping tickets for Sonisphere 2014 are on sale now, with Rock Royalty packages almost sold out.
