The three-day rock and metal festival returns to the grounds of Knebworth House from Friday, July 4 to Sunday, July 6.

The Prodigy, Iron Maiden and Metallica have already been confirmed as main stage headliners over the weekend, which will celebrate 40 years of rock concerts at the Hertfordshire stately home.

Slayer, Alice in Chains, Mastodon, Airbourne, Karnivool, Ghost and Gojira were all added to the poster last week.

And another 10 or so bands for the UK leg of the international touring festival will be confirmed by organisers on Tuesday, January 21.

A status update on Sonisphere Festival’s official Facebook page this afternoon (Friday) read: “Band announcement Tuesday 21st January at 5pm. Spread the word!”

Team Sonisphere member and KiliLive promoter Alan Day (@alandayrocks) also tweeted: “We are going to announce at least 10 bands on Tuesday at 5pm to play the party at Knebworth. follow @Sonisphere for all the info!”

That will inevitably start rumours over who might be added to the 2014 line-up next week, with festival co-founder Stuart Galbraith previously telling the Welwyn Hatfield Times – the festival’s local newspaper – that the bill would pay homage to Knebworth’s rock heritage.

Festival bookers at KiliLive also said at the time of January’s first announcement that a couple of “special guests” would be added soon.

The statement from Team Sonisphere said: “Many more bands, including two special guests, will be announced shortly.”

The confirmed day splits so far for Knebworth will see The Prodigy play the opening Friday night.

Iron Maiden and Metallica will exclusively headline Sonisphere’s Hertfordshire leg over the following two days, playing their only UK shows of 2014 at Knebworth.

British heavy metal legends Iron Maiden will close their Maiden England World Tour at Knebworth on the Saturday, playing some songs live for the last time ever.

Thrash metal titans Metallica will close the festival with their interactive ‘By Request’ set, with ticket holders able to vote online for any tracks from the band’s 140-song catalogue.

This summer’s Sonisphere European tour will includes dates in Finland, Norway, Germany, Italy, Switzerland and Poland, with Metallica headlining all shows. Sonisphere Hamburg on June 4 has already sold-out.

Rock in Rome will take place on July 1, with the Sonisphere’s Basel leg at St Jakobspark on Friday, July 4 – clashing with the first day of Knebworth.

An update on the Sonisphere Switzerland Facebook page said: “Soon we will be able to give you guys the complete line-up for the Basel show. Just a few more days...stay tuned. It’s gonna be worthwhile!”
