The American thrash metal heavyweights will be performing their ‘By Request’ set list as chosen by ticket holders.

Festival-goers can expect a set including Metallica classics Master of Puppets, One, Seek and Destroy, Enter Sandman, Nothing Else Matters, Sad But True, Ride the Lightning and the band’s cover of Whiskey in the Jar.

Before Metallica close the main stage proceedings, the Sonisphere 2014 Sunday line-up will also see live performances from Alice in Chains, Mastodon, Airbourne, Devin Townsend Project and Gojira.

The opposite Saturn Stage will be headlined by Dream Theater.

Dropkick Murphys, Reel Big Fish, Karnivool and Protest The Hero will also play Saturn, with bands appearing on the two main stages alternating to avoid clashes.

British heavy metal veterans Iron Maiden played Sonisphere last night (Saturday), bringing their mammoth three-year Maiden England World Tour to a close at Knebworth.

Frontman Bruce Dickinson had earlier taken to the skies for a spectacular 15-minute dogfight in replica World War One planes.
