"Many more bands, including two special guests, will be announced shortly."

The three-day rock and metal extravaganza returns to the grounds of Knebworth House from Friday, July 4 to Sunday, July 6.

And promoters of the European touring festival today (Monday) added Australian hard rockers Airbourne, Seattle legends Alice in Chains, Swedish doom-rockers Ghost and French progressive-metallers Gojira to the bill.

Thrash metal giants Slayer will also return to Knebworth, having played the Hertfordshire venue as part of the Sonisphere Big 4 Friday in 2011.

Completing the latest line-up announcement are Perth-based Australian prog-rock quintet Karnivool and mighty American metallers Mastodon, who appeared at the inaugural Sonisphere UK leg in 2009.

Mastodon’s exclusive 2014 performance at Sonisphere will be the first chance for British fans to see them play tracks from their forthcoming sixth album, which is due out in the spring.

A statement from Team Sonisphere added: “Many more bands, including two special guests, will be announced shortly.”

The first wave of support acts join previously announced main stage headliners The Prodigy, Iron Maiden and Metallica.

Having played their biggest headline show at Alexandra Palace in London last year, Sonisphere 2014 will be Alice in Chains’ only UK festival appearance of the year.

AiC lead vocalist and guitarist William DuVall said: “We’re very excited to be playing once again at Sonisphere, particularly as this year has us joining our long time friends in Metallica. It should be a fun ride for everyone – both on and off the stage.”

Airbourne channel the spirit of Thin Lizzy, Def Leppard, Judas Priest and AC/DC into a thrillingly updated version of good time rock and roll.

Frontman and guitarist Joel O’Keefe said: “We are deeply honoured to have the green light for an Airbourne/Knebworth assault, to get out there on Knebworth’s hallowed ground in front of that sea of heavy metal maniacs and give them every ounce of blood sweat and energy we got.”

Fellow Aussies Karnivool are also looking forward to returning to Knebworth this summer.

Ahead of their exclusive appearance, guitarist Drew Goddard said: “We can’t wait to get back to play Sonisphere UK 2014.

“Sonisphere Knebworth was actually the first European festival we ever played a few years ago, so it will be nice to come back and kick some grass and have people know who we are!”

This summer’s Knebworth Sonisphere festival will help celebrate the famous rock venue’s 40th anniversary.

The day splits will see The Prodigy play the opening Friday night at Knebworth.

Metal legends Iron Maiden and Metallica will exclusively headline Sonisphere’s UK leg over the following two days, playing their only UK shows of 2014 at Knebworth.

Iron Maiden will bring their Maiden England World Tour to a spectacular finale at Knebworth on the Saturday, playing some songs live for the last time ever.

Metallica, meanwhile, will close the festival with their interactive ‘By Request’ set, with ticket holders able to vote online for any tracks from the band’s 140-song catalogue.

The 17 most popular choices will be performed on the Sunday night. A new track will also be chosen by Metallica.

Weekend camping tickets for Sonisphere 2014 are on sale now.
