Royal Albert Hall gala performances for Hertfordshire pupils

22:10 10 May 2012

PUPILS from across the county will raise the roof at the Royal Albert Hall in London this weekend.

For young singers and musicians from Hertfordshire will present a showcase of performances at two special gala concerts at the world famous venue on Sunday, at 1.15pm and 7.30pm.

This year’s gala will celebrate the creativity of musicians from Herts, both established and aspiring, opening with a debut composition from Richard Lewis entitled Fanfare for the Hertfordshire Schools’ Symphony Orchestra.

More than 2,100 pupils aged nine to 11 from more than 100 county primary schools will join together in a massed choir to sing songs celebrating the London 2012 Olympic Games and associated national and sporting themes.

A new commission, What A Joy It Is, by composers Michael Davidson and Daniel Basford, will follow The Winner’s Dream, written by Presdales School director of music Paul Burrell.

In both pieces, the orchestra and massed primary school choirs will be joined by dancers from Queens School in Bushey.

Local rock bands and young songwriters nurtured by the Hertfordshire Music Service will complete the programme alongside the county youth brass band.

Frances Button, Herts County Council cabinet member for education and skills, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for young people in Hertfordshire to perform at one of the world’s greatest concert venues.

“The gala concert is a fitting way to celebrate the number of talented young musicians in the county and the excellent work of Hertfordshire Music Service.”

Tickets are available from the Royal Albert Hall box office on 0207 589 8212 or www.royalalberthall.com
