ONE of the bands leading the vanguard of new British jazz over recent years have been Empirical.

Since 2007 they have been wowing audiences with their sound, which allies a contemporary approach with distinct nods to the great heritage of jazz. This month the fourpiece are playing for Cambridge Modern Jazz Club in the inimitable surroundings of Hidden Rooms, the subterranean venue on Jesus Lane.

Bassist Tom Farmer says the secret of the band’s success is their democratic approach to music.

He said: “There’s not really a leader as such, musically speaking. So when we get on the bandstand everyone’s equally responsible for the direction of the music. Also we’re equal in terms of composition, so anyone can bring any piece to the group. The guys are all really into the tradition of jazz. When I first met Shane [Forbes – drums] and Nathaniel [Facey – sax] I was blown away by how much they loved the traditions. They knew all the old records and loads about different musicians, and that really inspired me.”

Judge for yourself when Empirical come to the Hidden Rooms tomorrow (Friday). The gig starts at 8pm and tickets are £12-£16. See www.wegottickets.com/event/196707
