Continuing their tradition of performing one of the great Bach Passions in Harpenden during Lent, Amici Voices will perform his John Passion in the town next week.

The concert will be at 7.30pm next Thursday, April 3, in St John’s Church in Southdown and follows the choir’s performances of Bach’s Matthew Passion and Christmas Oratorio in 2013.

Amici Voices are a chamber choir of eight young singers drawn from current or former Oxbridge choral scholars and are among the best young voices in the UK.

They are highly accomplished consort singers and vocal soloists in their own right and will sing both the choruses and arias.

They will be joined by period instrumentalists Amici Baroque Players – led by violinist Clare Salaman – to recreate a ‘one-per-part’ performance of Bach’s dramatic masterpiece as it might have been heard in his day. The performance will be sung in German.

The relatively small number of performers – just 20 with one player and singer per part – enables the detail of the music, especially the counterpoint and the unusual instrumentation, to be better heard and appreciated. It also solves balance problems associated with a large scale performance and achieves a greater dynamic contrast.

In addition, it brings the music of what is a highly dramatic work closer to the listener and recreates the forces which Bach had available at the first performance.

The concert is directed by Terence Charlston who has been described as one of Britain’s leading early keyboard players and a specialist in the performance of Baroque music.

Tickets for the concert are £15 with under-18s and students £5, available from 01582 462024 or on the door.
