The UK’s biggest independent touring festival won this year’s Kerrang! Award for ‘Best Festival’ at Troxy in London last week.

One third of the pop-punk, ska, metal and rock event – Slam Dunk South – is held at The Forum Hertfordshire on the University of Hertfordshire’s College Lane site.

The North and Midlands legs of the music bash take place in Leeds and Wolverhampton.

The event uses a combination of indoor and outdoor stages across urban sites to create a totally unique festival experience.

The Slam Dunk team took the prize at The Relentless Kerrang Awards last Thursday in front of stellar guests including Status Quo, The Ramones and Fall Out Boy. The night was hosted by Andrew WK.

Dubbed one of the “craziest” festivals by music fans, Slam Dunk beat competition from the likes of Leeds Festival, Download and Bloodstock Festival, firmly cementing its reputation as a major event for the alternative rock scene.

Festival supremo Ben Ray said: “It’s been nearly 10 years of hard work but to get this recognition makes it worth it.

“Can’t believe we won against larger events such as Leeds Festival, so that makes it even better.”

The festival, which celebrates its 10th birthday next year, featured a huge roster of bands across seven stages at The Forum complex last month.

Slam Dunk 2014 was headlined by The All-American Rejects.
