“EV’RY time we say goodbye, I die a little…” And so it is, just a few months after Amy and Rory’s bittersweet farewell brought television viewers to tears, they now feature in their last audio adventure, drawing a definitive line under the Pond era of Doctor Who.

Onboard the massive space station the Jörmungandr, Doctor Elehri Mussurana and her husband-lab partner Ernst Wharner are at a crucial point in their covert experiments to create a manmade wormhole in time and space when the TARDIS unexpectedly arrives, ripping reality at the seams and tearing the universe in two.

The consequences of this unconventional materialisation are that both Amy and the shop are stranded elsewhere, and the Doctor and Rory have to find some way of getting them back…

Writer Scott Handcock admirably captures the characters of the TARDIS crew, and weaves a gripping, well-paced narrative which really feels as though it could have been a television episode, it’s that perfectly pitched.

To complement the deft scripting is a standout reading by Frances Barber, who played the eyepatch-wearing Madam Kovarian in Series 6, and here makes her debut for AudioGo’s Who series.

Probably one of the strongest releases in the Eleventh Doctor audio exclusives, Snake Bite stands up admirably to repeat listening, and bodes well for the long-term future of the range.
