A musician who has played alongside such legendary figures as Chuck Berry and The Rolling Stones’ Mick Jagger will be performing live in WGC this evenning (Sunday).
Art Themen will appear with the Clark Tracey Trio at Herts Jazz Club tonight (Sunday) in the Terrace Suite at the Hawthorne Theatre.
The top saxes man was involved in the traditional jazz scene in Manchester in the late 1950s.
A member of the award-winning Cambridge University jazz band from 1958 to 1961, he became involved in the early London blues scene, playing alongside such luminaries as Alexis Korner, Jack Bruce, Mick Jagger and Chuck Berry.
He also fronted the Stan Tracey Quartet for 20 years from 1976.
A busy and sought after musician, Art is nowadays most often seen on stage with many of the best of Britain’s top jazz players such as Alan Barnes, John Donaldson, Dave Newton, Georgie Fame, Don Weller, Mornington Lockett, among many others.
His style is influenced by Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins, as well as John Coltrane.
He is renowned for his originality and individual style, with exciting and unpredictable performances.
Joining him at Herts Jazz will be John Critchinson on piano, Mark Lewandowski on bass and Clark Tracey on drums.
Advance tickets cost £3 students, £8 members, £10 concessions and £11 full.
