The gates to Sonisphere Festival 2014 open at Knebworth Park later today (Thursday), with the first campers arriving on site for a weekend of music from more than 100 bands.
The international touring festival’s UK leg takes place in the grounds of Knebworth House until Sunday night, with campsites then closing at noon on Monday, July 7.
The Prodigy, Iron Maiden and Metallica will headline the main stage over the three days of music mayhem in the Hertfordshire countryside.
Ahead of the festival site opening to all camping ticket holders at 3pm today, the Highways Agency has warned drivers in Hertfordshire of possible delays and some road closures in the vicinity of Knebworth House.
The northbound entry slip road and southbound exit slip roads on the A1(M) Junction 7 will be closed from 5am today (Thursday) until 3pm on Monday, July 7.
Thousands of revellers are due at the event and congestion is expected on the A1(M) and around Knebworth and Stevenage.
Festival-goers will need to use the A1(M) Junction 7 to access the Sonisphere site, which is different to previous events at the stately home.
For those attending the festival and those that aren’t, motorists travelling southbound should leave the motorway at Junction 8 and travel along the A602 Hitchin Road, A1072 Gunnels Wood Road and A602 Broadhall Way.
Northbound motorists should use Junction 7 and turn left into the venue.
Non-festival traffic can access Stevenage as normal.
Westbound traffic should use the A602 into the venue via Junction 7 of the A1(M) and eastbound traffic should use the A602 to Junction 8 of the A1(M) then follow signs as for southbound traffic.
To leave the venue, motorists should take the Novotel Road onto the A1(M) Junction 7 roundabout and access the A1(M) southbound or A602 eastbound.
Alternatively, drivers can leave the site through Deer Gate and go onto Old Knebworth Lane, then the B197 London Road and follow signs to Junction 7 of the A1(M) for the A1 south or Junction 8 of the A1(M) for the A1 north.
There will be no access to the festival site from Knebworth Railway Station.
All festival-goers arriving by train will need to use the station at Stevenage, where a shuttle bus will run to and from the festival site over the weekend.
