ART-POP veterans 10cc drop by the Alban Arena in St Albans later this week for a concert as part of the group’s 40th anniversary tour.
IT’S 40 years since 10cc first troubled the UK singles charts with Donna.
It reached number two.
A few months later, in May 1973, single Rubber Bullets topped the UK charts.
The multi-talented Manchester supergroup formed by Graham Gouldman, Lol Creme and Kevin Godley enjoyed further number ones with I’m Not In Love and Dreadlock Holiday.
The band also scored top 10 hits in the 70s with The Wall Street Shuffle and Life is a Minestrone.
Following a hugely successful nine-date major venue tour earlier in the year, which included the band’s first-ever performance at the Royal Albert Hall, the legendary 70s pop band will stop by the Alban Arena in St Albans on Friday, October 12.
Having sold more than 15 million albums in the UK and 30 million worldwide, 10cc are celebrating an incredible 40 years in the music business.
Founding member Gouldman said: “It’s hard to believe it’s 40 years since 10cc was born in Strawberry Studios in Stockport.
“I’m immensely proud of all we have achieved. As long as the fans want to hear the songs played live I’ll be happy to oblige.”
Noted for their studio polish, virtuoso musicianship, impeccable vocals and clever lyrics, their style was soon dubbed ‘art pop’.
The band earned critical respect and public acclaim for singles such as Donna, Rubber Bullets, The Dean and I and Wall Street Shuffle, which showcased the band members’ talents as musicians, singers, songwriters and masters of the studio.
Before forming 10cc, Gouldman penned a string of million-selling hit songs for other artistes, including For Your Love, Heart Full of Soul and Evil Hearted You for The Yardbirds, Bus Stop and Look Through Any Window for The Hollies, No Milk Today and Listen People for Herman’s Hermits, Pamela Pamela for Wayne Fontana, Behind the Door for The St Louis Union and Cher and Tallyman for Jeff Beck.
The live line-up, together now for 10 years, features Gouldman on vocals, bass and guitar, Rick Fenn (lead guitar, vocals), Paul Burgess (drums, vocals), Mick Wilson (percussion, guitar, vocals) and Mike Stevens (keyboards, guitar, sax, vocals). Rick and Paul have both worked with 10cc since the mid-70s line-up.
“The band, as it stands now is absolutely fantastic. And of course our main strength and what we’re selling is the songs, nothing else,” said Gouldman.
“This is as near as you’re ever going to get to hearing the perfect 10cc. Hit after hit after hit. It’s relentless. We show no mercy.”
