Royston Golf Club round-up
THE Senior Section September Medal was played on Wednesday and saw Fred Wilding shine with a net 69 off his 21 handicap, now cut to 20. Close behind were three players all on net 72, Ken Ayre, Stuart Knight and Ed Collins. Fred now goes forward to next year’s Bruce Symes Midweek Championship Trophy.
On Saturday the Men’s Stableford competition, 37 competed but it was Graham Richardson with 39 points who came to the fore on the day and to reward him for his win, he is now cut to 13 handicap. In close pursuit were Peter Prentice and Stuart Knight also with 39 points and only separated by the countback rule.
In the ladies’ section, despite a serious domestic injury to her right hand resulting from trying to lift a casserole lid without an oven glove, Marjory Humphreys played another great round of golf to lead the field in the Ladies Stableford and Foundation Brooch Trophy event. Humphreys now has to wait for the result from the Saturday Ladies’ Alternative game on Saturday to see whether she is the overall winner. In second place in the midweek leg was Pam Bonnett, followed by Carolyn Devaney and Tina Collins.
In the Men’s Sunday Greensomes game, the pairing of Jim Geraghty and Kevin Cooper came first with 44 points closely followed by brother Jim and George Hopkins on 43, and Mark Bonnett playing with Malcolm Hayes in third also with 43 points.
On Sunday, the club again played host to the Cambridge University ‘Outlaws’ team. The match is played annually and dates back to 1893. Played over 36 holes the morning Foursomes Game was Royston 3 games to the Outlaws 1 game and the afternoon singles also resulted in a win for Royston at 4½ games to 3½.
On Monday 16 Royston players travelled to South Beds Golf Club for their return match having won the first leg at Royston 7 games to 1. On the day, playing away at the Luton course, the Royston team lead by captain David Crossley managed a 4-4 draw to retain the Challenge Trophy.
