HIGH-FLYING Royston Town continued their fine start to the season with a thumping win over Holmer Green’s second string.

With the first team not in action at the weekend, all eyes were on the reserves and, with the inclusion of Ryan Lockett, this was always going to be interesting.

Indeed it was Lockett who opened the scoring after just five minutes when he scored a low drive after fine work from Danny Apostolos down the left.

Far from producing a flood of goals, this lead seemed to dull Royston’s attacking spirit and the scores were soon level after the Crows conceded possession in midfield.

However, they regained the advantage with another fine goal, this time from Conor Delacy who converted a JOSH BRONTI through-ball just before the interval.

With Bronti being withdrawn due to injury, Lee Bates was given his chance and the striker didn’t disappoint, as he scored with a delightful finish.

Again, Holmer Green were handed a lifeline when more sloppy defending led to Royston conceding a penalty which was duly converted to bring the visitors back into the game.

This did seem to spur Royston on and in particular, Bates, who forced an error for Jon Bitting to open his account.

Batesthen and then crossed brilliantly for Lockett to add his second of the match and put the result beyond doubt.

Lockett completed his hat-trick before being withdrawn and Bates rounded off the scoring with a typical fierce drive into the roof of the net to complete the rout.
