Having pulled ahead 9-0 by end five, number nine appeared to be Royston’s nemesis, allowing their opponents to pull ahead 11-9.

However two shots on the 14th end restored the balance with an eventual win of 16-14 to Royston on the last end.

In another exciting L&D pairing, Yvonne Whitehouse and Stuart Cook beat Rachel Tremlett and Glenn Williams, who tried and failed to kill the end giving a dramatic finish to the game.

The L&D Champion of Champions Stuart Cook produced an impressive win 21-9. In the National Mixed Fours, Rachel Tremlett, Linda O’Flanagan, Glenn Williams and Stuart Cook beat Northaw and Cuffley 19-9 to reach the finals in Leamington.

Three Vets games in a row brought good fortune to the home teams. Home to Baldock, Royston won by 71 shots to 56. Skip Margaret Ward had a fine game winning 25-9.

At home to Standon and Puckeridge, Margaret repeated her winning ways as skip to triumph 18-11 with skip Evelyn Huffer winning 24-16 and Shirley Pawson winning 14-13, overall securing a 56-40 victory.

Away to Stevenage, Royston again showed good form, with Roy Hancock, Ken Collinge and skip Pat Smith winning 25-15, Elizabeth Hardwicke, Maureen Gisby and Skip Derek Smith winning 22-10 and Beryl Huckle, Gwyn Hardwicke and Skip Shirley Pawson triumphing 22-8.

Skip Mick Smith with Petula Peel and Peter Archer rounded off the event winning 16-12 giving a total score of 85-45.

Two MDL matches resulted in more points for Royston. Home to Coton, skip Eileen Hyde had an impressive win, 26-7 as did skip Hans Rijk 22-14 and skip Peter Fisk 18-10, resulting in five points.

At home to Barrington, skips Derek Goodwin and Maureen Gisby won 15-13 and 14-11 respectively, Royston losing overall 56-67 but gaining two more points. The ladies held their own against Aston with excellent wins, Joan Knights, Jill Goode and Eileen Hyde winning spectacularly 36-5, while Pam Keating, Shirley Pawson and Eunice Dockree also won in great style 24-11.

Finally Royston ended the week on a high winning two friendly games. The first game against Ware 128-102, Toby Evans, Eileen Hyde, Margaret Ward and Captain Will Martin leading the way with a great 28-7 highest rink.

The second game against Whitethorn, producing two tied rinks, skip Gillian Fisk 14-14 and Derek Smith 21 all, but wins by skip Derek Goodwin 24-19 and skip Peter Fisk 21-18 were enough for overall victory 80-72.
