HATFIELD Swimming Club’s Adam Brown insisted there was more to come after bringing the curtain down on his World Championships adventure by reaching the 50m freestyle semi-finals in Shanghai.

The British 100m champion hit new heights in China by lowering his lifetime best to 22.08seconds in winning his opening round heat – qualifying fourth overall just 0.05secs behind world record holder Cesar Cielo.

Brown, who trains and studies at Auburn University in the USA, was unable to repeat the trick at the last 16 stage and clocked 22.21secs to miss out on the final by five places.

But after finishing 40th in the same event at his last World Championship outing in Rome two years ago, the 22-year-old was satisfied with his display.

“I took a lot from that and to make a semi-final at a World Championships is pretty good for me.

“Going into next year it is going to give me something really good to build on as I work towards the Olympics.

“I set myself a new lifetime best as well in the heats so I can’t really complain too much about how I have got on here and the experience of being at the World Championships and reaching the big evening sessions.”

Brown, a member of the 4x100m relay team at the Beijing Olympics in 2008, finished 21st in the heats of the 100m event in 49.13secs.

And after bouncing back to reach the semi-finals over half the distance, Brown admitted he was frustrated not to have made the medal showdown.

“I was a little bit disappointed because I didn’t go as fast as I would have wanted to go and I think I over-thought the race a bit,” added Brown.

“It didn’t go as well as I wanted it to go in my head. I knew it was going to be tough but racing against all these big guys but I think I just tried a little bit too hard.

“I think I just tried too hard and in the end I came out short of where I wanted to be in terms of times.”
