ROYSTON-based weightlifter Tony Morgan successfully qualified for the British Masters after coming through the Southern Masters on Saturday.

He competed in the under-94 kilogram bodyweight class in the 40-44-year-old age group – weighing in at 89 kilos – and he produced six good lifts to see him through to the British Masters to be held in Yorkshire on March 17/18.

He lifted 102 kilos in the snatch event, held in Bethnal Green, London, and 131 kilos (20 stone) in the clean and jerk format, giving him a total of 233 kilos. His aim for next month’s event is to snatch 105, and clean and jerk 135 to earn a total of 240 kilos.

Morgan began doing general weightlifting last year, before stepping up his dedication to Olympic weightlifting just after Christmas. He now trains two hours a day, five days a week.
