Physically, Greneway were one of the smallest teams in the tournament which had all the district winners from across the county. Greneway has booked their place as North East Herts Schools’ champions.

In their group games they ended up playing four back-to-back matches, which would be a test for any team. Their first match could not have been a worse start as they narrowly lost in the last two seconds 7-6 to Sheredes School. This meant they had to bounce back in their second match against Stevenage’s best, Marriotts. This time they converted their many chances and won in convincing style 18-0.

Next up were St Marys School (Hertford & Ware) and in a tighter game Greneway triumphed 7-3.

In their final group game they entertained Birchwood School and despite looking tired they had too much for their opponents and won 10-2 to book a place in the semi-finals.

Francis Bacon School (St Albans) were the opponents but the Royston side were again the superior side and won 8-2 – setting up a final against group rivals Sheredes. And they successfully avenged their opening match defeat with an 11-7 victory to seal the championship for the third time in the school’s history.

Assistant head teacher, Terry Graves, was understandably delighted with the girls’ achievement and said: “The teamwork, fitness, determination and skill shown today were outstanding. Every player made a valuable contribution to the triumph and made a very experienced teacher extremely happy.”
