Talented footballers from a Royston school renowned for its sporting excellence have been celebrating a prestigious ‘double’.

Greneway’s School’s Year 7 football team lifted a district and county double by beating Stevenage’s Nobel School 1-0 in the Stevenage/North Herts Schools’ U12 cup final in a close encounter. George Hill netted directly from a corner with only 120 seconds remaining to bring the cup back to Royston for the first time in three years.

They then beat Robert Barclay Academy 2-1 in another hard fought match to lift the cup after goals from Ik Ezete levelled at 1-1 after they conceded an early penalty.

With extra time looming Joe Turkington unleashed a ‘world beater’ from 25 yards to bring the county cup to Royston for the first time.

Terry Graves, assistant head said: “A double for a team who refuse to give up. They’ve developed beyond all expectations this season and thoroughly deserve this success.”
