Stevenage lost to a late goal at Cambridge United on Saturday through Uche Ikpeazu.

The promising 22-year-old forward headed home from close range in the 88th minute of this Sky Bet League Two clash.

The result was cruel on Boro as they yet again suffered a late defeat to the U’s at the Abbey Stadium.

The home keeper – Galway-borm David Forde – was in inspired form as he kept Darren Sarll’s men at bay throughout the game the visitors from North Herts did not deserve to lose.

Sarll made two changes to the side which drew 1-1 with Coventry on Tuesday with the injured Matty Godden replaced by Alex Samuel and Harry Beautyman’s place taken by the more experienced Chris Whelpdale.

The first half was a stop start affair which ended with Danny Newton firing narrowly over the bar.

Newton then headed past the post before the 37-year-old former Millwall keeper proved equal to a long-range strike from the same player shortly afterwards.

Cambridge then had two opportunities to score, with Iberhe heading wide before Lewis couldn’t keep his shot down from close range.

There were calls for a penalty as Samuel was tussled to the ground in the box. Newton then had a goal-bound shot blocked by Leon Legge.

The lively Tom Pett then weave his way through Cambridge’s backline before firing narrowly missing the top corner.

With 20 minutes remaining Joe Fryer palmed away a powerful Ikpeazu effort from distance before Newton headed off the line from the resulting corner.

Whelpdale was then denied by an outstanding stop from Forde before Ikpeakzu’s late strike broke Boro’s hearts as Man of the Match Forde kept Boro at bay in the closing moments.

Sarll’s men have a break from league football this week with the eagerly-awaited FA Cup second round clash with Swindon Town on Saturday at the Lamex.
