Royston Golf Club’s Sue Bidwell and Sue Dean are through to the third round of the prestigious Daily Mail Foursomes competition.
The pair beat Cambridge Meridian Golf Club at home by 3&2 in their second round tie. The draw for the third round will be made after April 21.
Elsewhere, the club invited non-members to sample its heathland course on Saturday in the Crow Country Open. Trevor Castle, playing off of a handicap of 23, was the overall winner with 40 Stableford points whilst Rob Pacey was second with 38 points off of his handicap of 25.
Pete Belcher, Matthew Laffineur and Larry Walsh all scored 37 points but the former took third on count-back. Walsh did not leave empty handed however as he took the prize for nearest the pin on the sixth while Ian Maddison won the prize for nearest the pin on the 10th.
In the Jean Wilkinson Trophy, Pam Bonnett, Marjory Humphreys and Evelyn Fenton secured six valuable away points against St Neots. This result was surpassed, however, as the team then followed up with a whitewash at home against Barkway, winning all seven matches and collecting 14 points.
In the seniors’ April Stableford competition Stuart Knight hit a par four on the 18th to take the extra point and record a total of 36 to secure victory from Alan Hooton, who was leader in the clubhouse on 35. Ray Haw was third with 34.
The men’s Lombard Qualifier was won by Simon Clark who will head to Kings Lynn with club PGA professional Sean Clark. Simon, no relation to Sean, was one of three players to return 42 Stableford points, beating Jim Hart and junior captain Sam Chipperfield on count-back.
Chipperfield had a more successful Sunday, however, as he led the juniors to an away win at Dunstable in the Herts Ver Junior League. Royston’s team were two players short due to injury but won all four matches to end up victorious, 4-2.
The win qualifies them for the quarter-finals where they await to see their opponents.
