HEYDON Grange golfers Jean Black and Margaret Harvey saw off their Royston rivals to secure a place in the next round of the Daily Mail Ladies Foursome competition.

Black and Harvey, with home advantage, defeated Pam Bonnett and Jane Millership of Royston Golf Club, with a deserved 4-2 win.

Mike Barker and David Smallman contested the final of the Heydon Grange Winter Singles competition.

The pair, more familiar with playing competitions together, halved or exchanged holes early in the round, but by the turn, Smallman had built up a three-hole lead.

Barker did reduce the arrears at the start of hole nine, but by the 14th, Smallman had re-established his lead to be four up with four holes to play. Barker made play interesting by taking the next hole, but a par five on hole 16 was enough for Smallman to claim victory.
