Royston Golf Club round-up

MARK BAILEY became the first Royston golfer of 2012 to enter his name in the Hole in One Book on Saturday.

Using a rescue wood from the 10th yellow tee, Bailey struck the ball 225 yards to the green and watched in amazement as, after a short roll, it dropped into the hole.

Also playing on the day, but in the Saturday Stableford competition along with 33 members playing off the white tees, Simon Clark led the field home with 40 points off his 12 handicap. Graham Richardson came second followed by Trevor Sweeting, Wayne Hunt, David Caunce and Oliver Pemberton all on 38 while Stuart Knight finished seventh with 37 points.

Meanwhile only 27 of 34 entrants were able to complete the Men’s January Medal the previous week due to the windy conditions.

First place went to Brian Holson with a net 68 followed in second place by David Bidwell, on countback. Both players saw their handicaps adjusted by two shots, with Holsons cut to 14 and Bidwell’s to 19.

Keith Taylor finished in third place with a net 72, and was the only other player on the day to play to his handicap as half the field struggled to break 80.
