A FEW facts your recent correspondent may be interested in (Postbag, March 6).

Cambridgeshire police have designated Melbourn car park as an anti-social hot spot.

It publishes a quarterly neighbourhood profile for the Melbourn/Bassingbourn panel meetings, and the latest shows that Melbourn top the table for anti-social behaviour and criminal damage in this region with the worst areas in the village being around the car park and The Moor.

I'm not a parish councillor, but my understanding is that every council has a statutory duty to consider the reduction of crime and disorder in all of their decisions (Crime and Disorder Act 1998). For Melbourn to notify the licensing authority that it should be aware of the problems at the car park when reviewing the kebab van licence is simply complying with that duty.

The problems at the car park are such that Cambridgeshire's Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership has set up a Melbourn car park problem solving group to look into possible ways of reducing the crime and disorder problems.

Can I also ask that anyone with an interest in preserving the amenity of the kebab van at the car park should consider the quality of life issues for those of us that live nearby and support us by insuring that those who do use it act in a responsible way.

NAME and ADDRESS SUPPLIED

IN the report in The Crow saying Council claims take-away van causes anti-social behaviour it was stated that Melbourn Parish Council agreed that the licence of the kebab van should not be renewed.

The parish council wishes to inform you that it did not say this. It did, however, agree to write to South Cambridgeshire District Council regarding the allegations about the kebab van.
