A LOCAL branch of the Women’s Institute celebrated 90 years last week.

The Bassingbourn-cum-Kneesworth group welcomed the Cambridgeshire chairman Heather Wilkins to the festivities on Tuesday (9), where a history of the branch was read out to members.

Branch chairman Jean Hamdorff said: “It was great for the chairman to come, and we all enjoyed the talk from our secretary Jenny Harrigan, who outlined the history of our branch, since it formed in November 1920.

“The group used to meet at the Victorian institute in South End, then the junior school in the High Street, then the village college, then the Red Cross centre and then moved to the community room at Knutsford Road, where we are now.”

An exhibition of photos, newspaper articles, reports and programmes was on display to members, while a birthday cake and good bags were also given out.

The Bassingbourn-cum-Kneesworth branch was formed just five years after the inaugural British group at Llanfairpwll on Anglesey in North Wales, and its first meeting attracted 115 members.

The group meets every second Tuesday of the month at the Knutsford Road community room in the village. For more information contact Mrs Hamdorff on 01763 242139.
