Members of the The Wimpole Estate conservation team have gone to new heights to learn more about a crystal gas light, which “still holds a few mysteries” at the 17th century home.

The team got up close to the gasolier, which was designed by renowned architect Sir John Soane and hangs in the dome of Wimpole Hall’s Yellow Drawing Room, by going up carefully-constructed scaffolding – before cameras were used to get even closer to the top of the light and underneath.

Iain Stewart, Wimpole’s house and collections manager, said: “It’s a rare chance to be able to get a proper look at this wonderful gasolier which still holds a few mysteries for us.

“We’ll be making some recommendations on how best to conserve the gasolier and we’ve already gained some insight into how it may have been lit when it was first installed.”
