War veterans addressed visiting teachers and students from across the Atlantic who have been participating in a summer residency.

The group of Americans, who are participating in the American Air Museum summer residency, met the World War Two veterans at the Imperial War Museum Duxford where they heard the ex-soldiers recount their experiences in the war.

Among those speaking was Fred Fitch, who was part of the first wave on Sword Beach during the D-Day landings.

He said: “I served with Americans during the war and stayed in New York for a time. We got on very well and the food was good – we got American food you see!

“The Americans were always polite – and still are –the Royal Marines still have a close relationship with American Marines and the veterans as well.”

The teachers have spent two weeks in the UK visiting a range of World War Two sites. The culmination of their trip was a two-day summer camp, where they taught history to 14-16-year-old students.
