An investigation has been launched after a chemical explosion at a factory yesterday (Wednesday).
The incident happened following a chemical spillage at Johnson Matthey PLC in Orchard Road, Royston, at 6.45pm.
A spokesman for the Health and Safety Executive - a national independent watchdog for health, safety and illness in the workplace - confirmed that they are investigating the circumstances surrounding the explosion but would not comment further.
No one was injured in the incident which was attended by police and six fire engines.
Police closed Orchard Road at the junction with South Close, and York Way with the junction with Beverley Close until 9.20pm as a precaution.
Earlier a spokesman for Johnson Matthey PLC in Royston thanked firefighters and police for their efforts.
John Gourd, Johnson Matthey PLC’s site planning and services director, said: “This was an isolated incident, which was completely contained within the production area.
“I would like to thank the emergency services for their quick and efficient response. At Johnson Matthey, health and safety is our highest priority and this incident will be thoroughly investigated.”
