A farmer is relieved that two large hay stacks which caught alight this morning (Friday) were “worthless”.
The fire occurred in two separate stacks, situated 800 meters apart and weighing more than 120 tonnes, at 10.19am on Northfields Road near Ashwell.
Two fire engines attendended the scene, one from Letchworth and Baldock Fire Station and one from Royston, and worked to contain the fire and let it burn itself out.
The cause of the fire is not yet clear.
The famer who owned the bales spoke to the Comet but asked to remain anonymous.
He said: “I saw smoke coming from the stacks this morning. Luckily the hay was old and worthless, and wasn’t being used for anything.
”The fire bridge came and separated it all out and have left it to burn out.”
Police attended the scene but did not close any roads.
