The Royston branch of the Royal British Legion will not be closing

The Royston Royal British Legion (RBL) Branch and affiliated RBL Club has said that the branch is not closing depite rumours circulating in the town.

Concerns about the future use of the Legion Hall in Mill Road have been raised after a notice was put up by RBL Property last month.

It read: “A notice of proposed disposition of the Legion Hall property by a new leasehold interest”.

Geoff Apperley, club chairman and acting club secretary, said: “The reality is that the premises is not being disposed of. The notice wording is just legally required under the Charities Act 2011 and refers to the new lease being negotiated between RBL and the RBL Club which operates as a private members club, ie, a business.

“The freehold remains with the RBL charity and the local trustees remain unchanged.”

The notice also refers to a month-long consultation period required under the act to make the public aware of any new lease proposal.

Discussions on the new club lease will go ahead later this month once this notice period is complete.

The branch and club will continue to operate in Royston and welcomes new members.
