ROYSTON’S top young science brains have been analysing Irn-Bru in a competition organised by the Royal Society of Chemistry.

Three A-Level Chemistry students from The Meridian School - Ben Batchelor, Alec Fyn and Scott Size - travelled to the University of Hertfordshire to take part in the Young Analyst competition, and were highly commended for their performance.

Their task involved working in the undergraduate laboratory to analyse the chemical contents of Irn-Bru.

Ben said: “It was a great experience carrying out intricate experiments with the high-tec equipment”.

Meanwhile year 13 Chemists from the school entered the first round of the Royal Society of Chemistry International Olympiad, an annual competition to find the best and brightest young chemists from around the world.

The students completed a two-hour written paper on chemistry, and had to bring all their knowledge and analytical skills to bear on the problems. Results were included Silver Certificates for Suzie Brown and John Middlemass, and bronze certificates for five other pupils.
