Royston was rocking on Saturday as the town centre filled with stalls and live music for the Royston Summer Rock event.

Organised by retailers group Royston Means Business, the day saw the High Street packed with stalls from various local businesses and organisations. There were also a host of games and stalls with family entertainment, while in Fish Hill Square a host of lives bands entertained crowds.

Tony Field, manager of the M-Viron mobile phone store, is one of the event’s organisers.

He said: “We had a lot more stalls than last year, with over 30 organisations taking part. We had a Hawaiian theme, and lots of the shop keepers got involved by dressing their windows in Hawaiian style.

“A lot of people came down to see it, and that’s what the event is all about. We want to bring people into the town, so that they’ll see how good the High Street is and come back to do their shopping.”

The music side of the day, entitled Soul in the Square, was organised by Ad-Hoc restaurant, who hosted the musicians at their premises in the old court house.

Manager of Ad-Hoc, Jason Todd, told The Crow: “It was an absolutely fantastic day. We had mainly soul music, with a few acoustic and alternative acts, and the Funk Soul Collective came back to do a bit of DJ-ing.

“It’s great to use the square for what’s it’s designed to be, which is a place people can get together and have a good time.”

Formed two years ago, Royston Means Business is aiming to help breathe new life into the High Street. The group will be holding a pre-Christmas event on December 6, and hope it will include and enlarged ice rink, after all sessions on last year’s temporary rink sold out.

Bookings are now being taken for stalls for the Christmas fair. To book a place, email roystonmeansbusiness@gmail.com.
