MP Oliver Heald has been sworn in as the Solicitor General

ROYSTON’S MP who will advise the Government and the Crown Prosecution Service on the law has been sworn into the position.

North East Herts MP Oliver Heald was sworn in as Solicitor General of Great Britain by the Lord Chief Justice at a ceremony at the Royal Courts of Justice.

The post, which dates back to 1461, is traditionally held by MPs who are barristers, a profession of Mr Heald’s for more than 20 years.

Prime Minister David Cameron gave Mr Heald the role – deputy to the Attorney General – following a cabinet reshuffle last month.

“It is an honour and a privilege to hold this ancient post,” said Mr Heald.

“For a barrister who goes into politics, it is a very special role. It is also unusual in providing an overview of government as I shall be giving legal advice to all departments. It will be challenging, but very rewarding. Of course, representing North East Herts remains my first priority.”
