A Royston man is currently circumnavigating the globe on a bike while raising cash for two charities.

Chris Young of Priory Lane, Royston, is nine months into the two-year trip which has already seen him traverse Europe and North Africa.

He is currently in the West African country of Cote D’Ivoire, and plans to head across Asia before catching a ship to Brazil and cycling up through South America to the United States and Canada.

Elspeth Young, Chris’s mum, told the Crow: “By all accounts he is having a great adventure and loving every minute, the highs and the lows. “The hospitality and friendship he has encountered so far have been amazing and it fills him with feelings of humility and restored his faith in humanity.

“I think his adventurous nature and love for travel started at a very young age, backpacking round the Greek islands with a friend and his mum at the age of seven!”

Chris is covering 100-150 km a day on his three-wheeled bike, Monty.

Mrs Young added: “As parents, his dad and I do worry but with technology today we manage to keep in touch and are able to talk with him most weekends.

“More importantly we are both extremely proud of him and his adventure, as is his sister, who also has an adventurous nature and has travelled to many countries and now lives in Brisbane, Australia.”

The 37-year-old, who set off in May last year, is supporting two charities during the ride: The Children’s Hospice Association of Scotland, and the Guillain Barre Syndrome charity, which helps people who suffer from the rare disease which affects the nervous system.

You can follow his progress, and make a donation to either charity, online via his blog. Log on to http://insatiablemeandering.blogspot.co.uk
