Members of the public have been invited to get their dogs microchipped for free this week.

Royston Safer Neighbourhood Team and the Dogs Trust are holding the event at the Corn Exchange on Thursday, January 16, between 10am and 2pm, and members of the public can bring their dogs along to be microchipped and grab a hot drink at the same time.

Police Community Support Officer Penny Tomsett said: “Getting your dog microchipped is so important and even more so now that it will be compulsory in 2016.

“We are delighted to be teaming up with the Dogs Trust in holding this event. By getting your dog microchipped you can be rest assured that should the dog be lost or stolen, it is more likely to be returned to you safe and sound.”

Funding for this initiative has been provided by the Dogs Trust who have set aside £6m toward the cost of microchipping all un-chipped dogs in England.

If members of the public can’t make this date they can still get their dog microchipped for free by calling the nearest Dogs Trust rehoming centre to make an appointment.
