As reported in the Crow last month, Hannah Bratton, 10, of Owen Drive, Royston, organised the delivery of more than 200 hand-made Christmas cards to all Royal Military Policemen (RMPs) serving in Afghanistan with the help of her sister, Emma, six.

The project, which Hannah named Hand Made Smiles, captured the imagination of many young people in the town, who pitched in to help make the cards after news of the project spread via Facebook.

Hannah’s mum, Jayne Bratton, said the delivery reached Afghanistan at 4am on Christmas morning, and that the family have received photographs of the cards being opened on Christmas morning.

She said: “Hannah’s words when she first saw the photos were ‘‘mummy, they are smiling. Mummy we did it!’”

Ten of the cards were also selected at random to be sent to a group of Chelsea Pensioners.

Mrs Bratton said that children were already working on next year’s cards. Greneway Middle School pupil Hannah hopes to send a ‘smile’ to all 2,500 RMPs worldwide, as well as members of the forces who have been hurt serving their country.

She said: “We have already been sent some pictures of some of the cards the children are making. This will continue throughout the year.

“We are delighted that we now also have children in other parts of the country who are planning on working with their local school to co-ordinate cards, while a Royston Brownies group are getting involved in making cards. The girls have offered to go and speak with them about the project.”

The girls decided to send cards to the RMPs in memory of their late granddad, Jim Heathcliffe, who served in the Royal Military Police for 22 years.
